What is the ideal weight for Plastic Surgery?

What is the ideal weight for Plastic Surgery?

When attending your consultation, along with discussing your expectations and the result you wish to achieve you will also be asked a series of questions that relate to your medical health. It is important to answer these questions openly and honestly as these provide vital information for your surgeon and anaesthetist. Your responses to these questions will highlight any issues that will help assess your suitability for surgery and any issues that should be monitored whilst under anaesthetic and post surgically.

In order to assess your suitability for surgery your BMI will be calculated, to work out your BMI (Body Mass Index) you should divide your weight in Kilograms by your height in Metres then divide the answer by your height again. The NHS provide an online tool to help calculate this should you wish:

http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx?Tag=

If your BMI is: below 18.5 – you’re in the underweight range, between 18.5 and 24.9 – you’re in the healthy weight range, between 25 and 29.9 – you’re in the overweight range and between 30 and 39.9 – you’re in the obese range.

Why is weight such an important factor when considering surgery?

Weight is a major factor when determining a patients’ suitability for surgery, not just for those who maybe overweight but for those underweight patients too. It is not uncommon for a surgeon to request a patient either loses or gains weight prior to surgery being undertaken. It is important to understand that this is for your own benefit, to ensure your body is in the optimum condition prior to surgery, so that your procedure is carried out with as little risk of complication as possible and to promote a speedy recovery post operatively.

Not only is it important that you are within the boundaries of a healthy weight for medical reasons but also from an aesthetic perspective too. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy diet post operatively will mean the result your surgeon has achieved is long term as any weight gain or loss following surgery will undoubtedly affect this result.

Understanding Liposuction

Understanding Liposuction

Liposuction was first introduced by French surgeon Dr. Yves-Gerard Illouz in 1982, providing a new option for individuals who wanted to get rid of unsightly fatty areas. Its elegance in simplicity and efficacy immediately brought it into the mainstream of plastic surgery. After three decades of use, liposuction remains one of the most popular procedures performed by plastic surgeons, accounting for 325,332 cosmetic surgical procedures in 2011, more than any other cosmetic procedure.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure used to remove unwanted body fat.

It involves sucking out small areas of fat that are hard to lose through exercise and a healthy diet. Liposuction is carried out on areas of the body where deposits of fat tend to collect, such as the buttocks, hips, thighs and tummy. The aim is to alter body shape, and the results are generally long-lasting, providing you maintain a healthy weight.

Liposuction works best in patients who are a normal weight and in areas where the skin is tight.

How is Liposuction carried out?

A narrow metal tube is inserted through a small incision in the nearby skin. It is attached to a strong vacuum pump which is drawn back and forth within the area of excess fat. The process removes tunnels of fat leaving the small blood vessels and nerves intact. The skin will then retract.

There are some minor variants in the techniques. Some surgeons inject the area to be treated with solutions (wet or tumescent technique) others do not. Suction is usually applied with a powerful vacuum machine, but it is sometimes perfectly adequate to use a simple syringe for small areas. Ultrasound assisted lipectomy is another variant.

Any incisions will be sutured and you will be fitted with a pressure garment to aid the aesthetic result of your procedure.

Post Op Care

You should not plan to drive yourself home. It is recommended that you have a responsible adult at home with you on the day of surgery.

If you have had liposuction totally by local anaesthesia, you may resume your usual diet immediately. Drink adequate amounts of water, fruit juices or soft drinks to prevent dehydration. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages for 48 hours before surgery and 48 hours after surgery.

Quiet rest is recommended for the first few hours immediately after surgery. You may carefully resume exercise and vigorous physical activity 2 to 4 days after surgery. Most people can return to a desk job within one to two days after surgery, although one must expect to be sore and easily fatigued for several days.

AMWC 2016 – The importance of congress to Plastic Surgeons

http://v1.euromedicom.com/

It’s been great reading all the updates from AMWC today, however due to commitments in the UK with my wonderful patients I’ve not been able to attend this years’ meeting in Monaco.

Why these meetings are an important part of the service my team and I bring to you in clinic

Many patients may not realise that in addition to carrying out consultations, operating and maintaining our own professional development there are many events that take place throughout the year of a Cosmetic Surgeon. These congress meetings are important opportunities for surgeons and industry specialists to come together to discover all the latest innovations in the world of Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery. We get to hear about new products and techniques, have the opportunity to attend lectures that are relevant to our own practices and also meet fellow surgeons from around the world.

These meetings are important to the team here at www.alanjpark.com as they give me the opportunity to bring this innovation home to my clinic and patients, ensuring I can provide the service my patients expect and deserve.

Crowdfunding for Cosmetic Surgery? The Royal College of Surgeons to enforce regulation in the UK

Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. It has become synonymous with the cosmetic surgery industry over recent years with the introduction of websites used to raise money for surgical procedures like breast implants.

I have written about responsible marketing in articles previously, and I do not believe Crowdfunding for Cosmetic Surgery is appropriate, it most certainly has a place but not within the cosmetic surgery industry. I have read many articles about successful crowdfunding projects; money raised for The Nepal Earthquake and the recent floods in the UK, for these kind of projects, Crowdfunding is a fantastic way of raising much needed funds.

Cosmetic Surgery on the other hand is serious and should not be taken lightly, I have to agree with Mary O’Brien of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) who called the practice “degrading”, and stated that’s BAAPS were “deeply concerned”.

According to a report in the Sunday Times, doctors who perform surgery on patients who have crowdfunded breast implants “could find themselves in front of the General Medical Council (GMC) and potentially banned from practising”.
I support any recommendations and legislation that safeguard our patients and improve the quality of care that patients receive across our industry. Reportedly the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) will be releasing new rules in mid 2016 that deter utilising web sites that help women to crowdfund for cosmetic surgery, great news RCS !!

What cosmetic treatments would you pay for? – Poll conducted by MoneySavingExpert.com

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/…/what-cosmetic-surgerytre…

What cosmetic treatments would you pay for?

UK Based Website Money Saving Expert conducted a recent poll surveying 10,500 members of the public to discover what treatments are the most desired.

94% of women under 40 said they would consider an Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

What is an Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to make the abdomen thinner and more firm. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall. This type of surgery is usually sought by patients with loose or sagging tissues after pregnancy or major weight loss

How is the procedure carried out

1. An incision is made from hip to hip just above the pubic area.
2. Another incision is made to free the navel from the surrounding skin.
3. The skin is detached from the abdominal wall to reveal the muscles and fascia to be tightened. The muscle fascia wall is tightened with sutures.
4. Liposuction is often used to refine the transition zones of the abdominal sculpture.
5. A dressing and sometimes a compression garment are applied and any excess fluid from the site is drained.

Patients are usually required to return for a post operative wound check appointment with a nurse to review recovery and to remove any sutures. An Abdominoplasty is major surgery and will usually require a two night stay in hospital and lots of rest to reduce the risk of post operative complications.

If you are considering an Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) I hold clinics in Warwick, Coventry and Nuneaton. If you would like to make an appointment please call 07468 418 419 or for more information you can visit my website www.alanjpark.com

Why the over 55’s are more likely to have cosmetic surgery

According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, in 2014 American’s 55 or over made up 24 per cent of all cosmetic surgery procedures, while those aged 40-54 made up 34 per cent – the highest percentage of all the age groups.

Recent research from The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) found that ‘tweaked, not tucked’ has become the new ideal for many

The term ‘tweaked not tucked’ seems entirely accurate, ladies and gentleman within this age group will very often during consultation request a more natural look, a look that doesn’t completely change the appearance but particularly in the case of facial surgery, enhances their face and gives a fresher appearance.

As we age, the skin can become tired and begin to sag or wrinkle making the face look tired and worn but often the skin still has good elasticity, therefore facial surgery can improve these symptoms

Facial rejuvenation procedures are by far the most popular procedures that I consult for in this age group, facial rejuvenation can be anything from Rhytidectomy (facelift), Blepharoplasty (eye lid correction) to Non surgical treatments for example Botox (Anti Wrinkle) or dermal fillers for those deeper lines and creases.

Can Facial Cosmetic Surgery help?

Rhytidectomy (facelift surgery) and Blepharoplasty (eye lid correction) procedures will help to restore youthfulness to the face giving an increased confidence and self esteem. Rhytidectomy (facelift surgery) is major surgery and will generally require a 2 night stay in hospital, in many cases patients undergo Blepharoplasty (eye lid correction) at the same time to get an optimum result, or this can be done separately usually as a daycase and sometimes using local anaesthetic as opposed to general.

How do i book a consultation?

Whilst every patient is different, a consultation will provide you with a realistic idea of the result you can expect to achieve.
