Does facelift surgery last forever?

Ever heard the saying ‘nothing lasts forever’? It would be difficult to say your facelift will last forever however you should see some long lasting results. The key to your surgery lasting as long as possible lies very much in the condition of your skin pre surgery.

For example a patient with sun damaged skin, a smoker or someone who has skin laxity issues due to weight loss or gain may not see as longer lasting results of that of a person with great skin pre surgery.

Maintaining a good skincare regime both pre and post surgery is extremely important, as is keeping the skin hydrated at all times.

About Facelift Surgery

Facelift Surgery usually takes around 3-4 hrs in theatre, it would be carried out under General Anaesthetic and will usually require a 1-2 night in hospital.

The incisions are made very discreetly above the hairline and extend down either just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear or down the front of the ear in the natural line, they then continue around the back of the lobe and towards the crease behind the ear and off into the lower scalp. Sometimes a small incision maybe necessary under the chin area, however this is something that would be discussed during consultation.

The skin is then sutured so that is it lifted upwards and backwards similarly to what you would see when you lift your own skin in the mirror to imagine how the surgery may look. Drains are usually inserted during the surgery to drain away any excess fluid and to reduce swelling and bruising.

After surgery

A facelift is major surgery and will require rest in the first few days and weeks following surgery to allow the swelling and bruising to subside. As there is swelling and bruising immediately following surgery it is not uncommon for the true results of the surgery to take some weeks to become apparent.

Risks and Possible Complications

As with any surgery there are potential risks and complications to be aware of. The most common risks are numbness, bruising and swelling particularly around the ear where the scars are located. There are also some more uncommon complications which include Infection, haematoma, seroma, skin necrosis and nerve damage. Of course patients are invited for regular checks with our nurse team who are on hand should medical assistance be required following discharge from the hospital.

Facelift – What are the options?

Facelift – What are the options?

A Facelift (http://alanjpark.com/facelift/) technically known as Rhyidectomy (from the Ancient Greek words that mean Wrinkle and Excision) is a Cosmetic procedure carried out to give the face a more youthful appearance.

There are several types of Facelifts available, some using non surgical techniques and others using surgical procedures.

According to the most recent 2015 statistics released by The British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) Facelift/Necklift surgery accounted for 7,419 of all procedures, an increase of 16% compared to 2014.

Surgical procedures usually involve the removal of excess skin with the tightening of underlying tissue depending on the type of surgery recommended, for a more effective result this is can be combined with Blepharoplasty (Eyelid) surgery.

What are the differences between these procedures?

Facelift

A patient recommended for a Full Face Lift would present with substantial skin laxity and droopiness in the neck. A full or “traditional” facelift addresses the sagging upper and lower neck skin and (platysmal) vertical neck bands, jowls, lower and mid nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It involves incisions from the temple scalp, along the front of the ear (inside the mid part for women), behind the ear into the crease then along or into the scalp hair behind the ear towards the back of the neck with undermining of the skin and tightening of underlying support tissues.

Mini Facelift

The Mini Facelift is recommended for a patient who describes minimal signs of ageing in the forehead and neck area but is concerned about skin laxity in the cheeks and loose skin in the mid face and jaw region. A patient suitable for a mini-facelift would have relatively good skin elasticity and relatively mild changes in the lower third of the face and neck. The surgery involves incisions from the temple scalp, along the front of the ear (inside the mid part for women) but ending at the level of the earlobe (in front or in back) – as much as 40% less scarring respectively, the recovery time is shorter compared to a full face lift.

Why the over 55’s are more likely to have cosmetic surgery

According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, in 2014 American’s 55 or over made up 24 per cent of all cosmetic surgery procedures, while those aged 40-54 made up 34 per cent – the highest percentage of all the age groups.

Recent research from The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) found that ‘tweaked, not tucked’ has become the new ideal for many

The term ‘tweaked not tucked’ seems entirely accurate, ladies and gentleman within this age group will very often during consultation request a more natural look, a look that doesn’t completely change the appearance but particularly in the case of facial surgery, enhances their face and gives a fresher appearance.

As we age, the skin can become tired and begin to sag or wrinkle making the face look tired and worn but often the skin still has good elasticity, therefore facial surgery can improve these symptoms

Facial rejuvenation procedures are by far the most popular procedures that I consult for in this age group, facial rejuvenation can be anything from Rhytidectomy (facelift), Blepharoplasty (eye lid correction) to Non surgical treatments for example Botox (Anti Wrinkle) or dermal fillers for those deeper lines and creases.

Can Facial Cosmetic Surgery help?

Rhytidectomy (facelift surgery) and Blepharoplasty (eye lid correction) procedures will help to restore youthfulness to the face giving an increased confidence and self esteem. Rhytidectomy (facelift surgery) is major surgery and will generally require a 2 night stay in hospital, in many cases patients undergo Blepharoplasty (eye lid correction) at the same time to get an optimum result, or this can be done separately usually as a daycase and sometimes using local anaesthetic as opposed to general.

How do i book a consultation?

Whilst every patient is different, a consultation will provide you with a realistic idea of the result you can expect to achieve.
