The most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for males?

The most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for males?

According to recent research the male cosmetic surgery sector accounts for around 10% of the overall industry which actually seems quite low, however I suspect there are many men out there that choose not to admit having surgical procedures for aesthetic purposes. Men these days are making much more effort with their appearance in every aspect from hair styling to keeping their body looking good and there is much more competition in the workplace to look good too so cosmetic surgery is becoming a commonly accepted option.
So which are the most common procedures?

There are always new and innovative procedures arriving on the market for men such as beard transplants and various styles of implants however the most common seem to have remained the same, they are:

• Blepharoplasty – Eye Lid Surgery
• Rhinoplasty – Nose Job
• Male Breast Reduction – For men suffering with the condition ‘Gynaecomastia’
• Liposuction – Fat Removal
• Otoplasty – Ear Correction

    What is a Blepharoplasty?

A #Blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin and sometimes fatty deposits or muscle that can make the eyes sag, look tired and in extreme cases impair vision. During the procedure the skin is excised via the natural creases of the eye so that scarring appears as minimal as possible and can sometimes be performed using Local Anaesthetic (this would be discussed during consultation).

    What is a Rhinoplasty?

A Rhinoplasty can take several forms depending on what the patient is concerned about, it could be the overall size of the nose or nostrils or maybe the shape which could have been affected by a break or even a previous surgery that the patient is not happy with. The most common technique used for #Rhinoplasty is carried out inside the nose, so no scars are visible following the surgery. An incision is made inside the nostrils, which allows access to the bones and cartilage beneath. The bone and cartilage is then reshaped and tissue is removed or added before the skin is folded back over the newly shaped nose.

What is a Male Breast Reduction?

The Male Breast Reduction is usually performed for patients suffering from #Gynaecomastia, the excessive development of male breasts (sometimes referred to as ‘man boobs’), which is thought to affect around 40% of the male population.
Gynaecomastia can present in several forms; as a fatty enlargement of the breast, excess glandular tissue or a combination of both. Depending on the complexity of the condition treatment may involve either Liposuction alone and/or an excision of the tissue and skin. The location and length of the incisions depends on the extent of surgery needed, but they are typically located around the edge of the areola or within the natural creases of the chest. Major reductions that involve the removal of a significant amount of tissue and skin may require larger incisions that result in more obvious scars.

    What is #Liposuction?

Liposuction is carried out to remove stubborn areas of excess fat that are hard to shift with diet or exercise alone. The most common areas of treatment in males are the chest (see Gynaecomastia), the stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks. A cannula is inserted into the area of concern usually whilst the patient is asleep under General Anaesthetic and the fat is removed. The small incisions are then sutured and patients are required to wear a compression garment for several weeks afterwards to retain the shape, reduce bruising and swelling and to aide healing – this is an important stage of recovery.

    What is an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is the medical term used to describe Ear Pinning or Ear Correction surgery. According to statistics 1 in 20 people suffer with protruding ears either because this is their genetic form or as a result of an injury. #Otoplasty surgery is carried out to return the ears to a more aesthetically pleasing position by re-sculpting or removing some of the cartilage at the back of the ear where the incisions are placed to conceal scarring as much as possible. Following completion of the surgery patients are required to wear a garment around the head to keep the ears in their new position for around 1 week afterwards.

The top 5 things male patients ask at consultation

http://metro.co.uk/2016/07/11/the-5-things-men-ask-for-when-they-go-for-plastic-surgery-5994559/

In 2015 it was reported by BAAPS that over 51,000 cosmetic procedures were carried out, a 13 % increase compared to the previous year. Of those over 4,100 were carried out on men, almost twice the number compared to a decade ago.

One US Plastic Surgeon has reported the 5 most popular things males ask for when visiting his clinic, which I think apply in most practices, here’s my opinion.

Speed

I would agree with this in both male and female surgery, patients are always looking for a treatment that affects their day to day routine as little as possible, from the procedure itself to the speed of recovery.

 ‘A banging Body’

Whilst ladies tend to invest more in facial procedures, I would say men are more focused on procedures to their body for example liposuction fat removal techniques and male breast reduction although I think Facial Aesthetics is becoming more popular in male patients. This is probably because that stigma of having anti wrinkle treatments for example has become less and less over recent years
To look natural

Whilst a proportion of patients prefer their Cosmetic Treatments to be obvious I would say most are looking for a more natural look, this is shown particularly in the recent increase of ladies who are looking for more natural breast augmentation. These days everyone wants a natural look, so people can’t tell they’ve have a treatment, this is more so the case in male patients.

No Pain

The degree of pain involved in a treatment is always a key question in consultation, women I would say are more understanding of the pain for beauty scenario, whereas men are less so in my experience. Like with any operation there is always a degree of discomfort involved but our medical team are well versed in keeping this to a minimum with setting the expectation and providing pain relief to keep this under control. Most patients expect the worst and unaware of their own pain threshold so are usually surprised how well they cope post operatively or post treatment.
To look younger

Whilst women in my experience seem to want to just slow or halt the ageing process, men want to look younger and more attractive – Non surgical treatments and fat removal are key in providing this.

Why patients choose Cosmetic Surgery?

http://www.doctortipster.com/35091-cosmetic-surgery-a-world-of-benefit.html

This article is somewhat different from other items I have written, I tend to write about specific procedures, the benefits of the procedure and how they are performed. However today I came across an interesting article about the reasons why patients choose to have surgery.

Cosmetic Surgery is often connected to vanity however there are many reasons why patients choose surgery and the results can often be life changing. We live in a nation where looking good is important, we pay to visit the gym and stay healthy but there are sometimes alternative reasons why surgery is an option and there are many examples of this.

  • Blepharoplasty is a procedure to remove sagging skin from the eyelid area, Sir Alan Sugar is an example of someone who chose this procedure for more medical reasons. Back in 2007, the 59-year-old electronics tycoon had the operation because of vision problems, A qualified pilot, he explained that droopy skin overhanging his eyelids was threatening to block his sight and stop him pursuing his hobby of flying Learjets. Affected vision is a common symptom that patients describe when attending consultation, corrective surgery is usually minor and can often be carried out under local anaesthetic as a daycase patient.
  • Breast Enlargement is the most popular procedure sought by patients either for reconstructive (following mastectomy) or cosmetic reasons. Enhancement surgery is common amongst women who have naturally small breasts or who have lost volume and size due to weight loss or breastfeeding. Breast size can affect body image and confidence and in some cases deter individuals from going about day to day life for example swimming and wearing closer fitting clothes. Breast Enlargement is performed by placing an implant either on top of the muscle or behind depending on the look the patient wishes to achieve and can give the patient their confidence back.

  • Breast Reduction is one of the most life changing procedures I carry out, patients with larger and sometimes pendulous breasts can often suffer with back pain which can lead to posture issues, inability to find comfortable underwear and can cause some ladies embarrassment. Breast Reduction surgery is major surgery as in some cases it can involve taking away large amounts of fat, glandular tissue and skin. Following surgery women report to feel increased confidence and most importantly a new feeling of comfort that was unknown before surgery.

  • Male Breast Reduction / Gynaecomastia sometimes referred to as ‘man boobs’ can be an embarrassing condition for men to live with. It is provoked by an imbalance of the hormones Oestrogen and Testosterone and can vary from small, firm enlargement of breast tissue just behind the nipple to a larger, more female-looking breast. Males suffering with Gynaecomastia can sometimes be deterred from going to the gym or being seen shirtless as the condition often affects body confidence. Depending on severity Gynaecomastia can be treated in two ways, either with liposuction alone or if required with a combination of excision and liposuction to result in a smooth chest contour.

  • Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty is a very common procedure particularly for women who have had children and men or women who have lost weight. Pregnancy and weight loss can leave excess skin and fat around the abdomen which cannot be shifted by exercise or diet alone, it can make certain clothes uncomfortable to wear and affect body image. An Abdominoplasty is major surgery and involves the removal of fat and skin from the area, giving the abdomen a smoother effect and should only be considered once weight loss has stabilised and a females family is complete.

This article outlines only a small number of the conditions that affect patients that make the decision to have surgery, however there are many more. BAAPS say the number of men opting for cosmetic surgery doubles in the past decade

BAAPS say the number of men opting for cosmetic surgery doubles in the past decade

Figures in 2015 suggest that cosmetic surgery in men has doubled over the last 10 years. Surgery for men only accounts for 9% of the total cosmetic surgery industry however one of the most commonly carried out procedures in my practice is Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia).  A Male Breast Reduction procedure is carried out to remove enlarged breast tissue (often referred to as ‘moobs’) and in extreme cases excess skin also.

The symptoms of Gynaecomastia can vary from a small, firm enlargement of breast tissue just behind the nipple to a larger, more female-looking breast, it can affect one or both breasts and the area can be painful or tender to touch.

What is involved in a Male Breast Reduction?

The breast is made up of two main components, glandular tissue (firm and dense) and fatty tissue (soft). The ratio of glandular to fatty tissue in any breast varies from individual to individual and in Gynaecomastia there may be an excess of both. If there is predominantly a diffuse fatty enlargement of the breast, liposuction is the usual treatment. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of breast enlargement, it may need to be excised (cut out). This will leave a scar, usually around the nipple edge. This excision can be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction. Major reductions that involve the removal of a significant amount of tissue and skin may require larger incisions that result in more obvious scars. The procedure is usually carried out under general anaesthetic although in minor cases local anaesthesia and sedation can be used.
